Maya Okafor leads design at Lumio, the business banking app used by more than three million small traders across West and North Africa. Her team designs for low-cost Android phones, patchy networks and families who share one device across a business, and treats every kilobyte and every tap as a cost the customer pays.

She has run research in markets from Kano to Kumasi and asks every designer on her team to spend a day each quarter in a shop that uses the product. Maya lives in Lagos, collects highlife records, and is slowly teaching herself to play the talking drum.
